The World of Sports at Houston, TX

Houston city, including the metropolitan area, has quite a rich sports culture. In fact, most residents are highly active in supporting their local teams and cheering them on in every event. There are a lot of sports available in the city, such as basketball, baseball, fencing, and more.

Major League Sports

Houston has professional teams involved in Major League Baseball, National Football League, National Basketball Association, Major League Soccer, National Women’s Soccer League, and National Pro Fastpitch. The only team they don’t have is a hockey team.

Professional Major League Teams

  • Houston Texans (NFL) – Founded in 2002
  • Houston Astros (MLB) – Founded in 1962, advanced to the World Series in 2005
  • Houston Dash (NSWL) – Founded in 2014
  • Houston Dynamo (MLS) – Founded in 2006, won MLS cup in 2006 and 2007
  • Houston Rockets (NBA) – Founded in 1967, won two titles in 1994 and 1995
  • Scrap Yard Dawgs (NPF) – Founded in 2016

There are also former teams that once made Houston their home. The now defunct WNBA Comets used to be in Houston from 1997 to 2008. This team won four WNBA championships consecutively, the most any Houston team ever had. The AFL/ NFL Oilers moved to Tennessee in 1997 and its name was changed to Titans. Prior to relocation, the team won two AFL championships in 1960 and the year after that. The Houston Aeros moved to Iowa in 2013, renaming themselves as the Iowa Wild for the American Hockey League.

  • Bayou Bucket Classic – NCAA Division I FBS football
  • Labor Day Classic – where the Texas Southern Tigers and the Prairie View A&M Panthers compete
  • US Men’s Clay Court Championship of the ATP World Tour 250 Series
  • Grand Prix Houston
  • AMA Supercross Championship – motorcycling event hosted from 1974 to 2003
  • LPGA Tour Championship – hosted by the city in 2009
